Beautiful is as Beautiful Does - Chapter One of Cellular Connections by Didi Menendez"You are beautiful" she says as she twirls wavy hair into a tight curl. "No. I am average honey", his voice exasperated from repeating this to himself so many times. "You are drop dead gorgeous", she repeats her stubborn streak smiling into the cellular one of grins that she only gets from hearing him. "Look", more gentle exasperation is sternly said into the receiver. "I am average. What counts is what is inside of me." "You are beautiful" she repeats and waits for him to interrupt her again mid sentence like she purposely enjoys because it gives her the feeling of him being in control. "No" he says before she gets a chance to start her explanation, her grin gets bigger, he starts to tell her about all those silly women that only looked at the way his chin was firm against deep mouth excavations or the way his leg's muscles contracted as pushed up into places or as they relaxed and lay limp on top of rough body rodeos. Or perhaps those women paid too much attention to his emerald amber eyes. Who knows. All he can identify with today is the fact that women used him for his looks. So she repeats, "You are beautiful". And as he is about ready to give up, she asked him in her most philosophical voice, "William Maxwell Christopholus, have I ever seen you in person?" Silence is heard as if the cellular connection has been terminated. Then she hears a silent, "Oh". Then a soft sigh, the kind that makes her body arch. "You are right. You have a point". She proceeds and tells him "okay mister, here is a bedtime story." ~Once upon a time there was a boy that talked to God. His momma would say to him that he was the most beautiful of all her five boys, since she lacked a daughter. One day Billy asked God if he was beautiful and God did not answer. Since he had made a pact with God at an early age that if God did not answer him back that the answer was yes. Then he took this as just another one of God's confirmation of what he already knew. Time passed by and he grew up and the girl next door said to him, "Billy you are beautiful, I want to do you." So they did it several times that summer of 1966 and he learned that beautiful meant that it would get you the pretty girls easily. He then took on a wife and he was carried away with her beautiful blond stature but as time went by the marriage ended because there was nothing but beauty in his life. Beautiful cars, houses, gardens, cats, and beautiful arguments about silly things that neither one of them remembered later. So after the marriage ended he went hunting and found that the women had not changed much since he was a teenager. Then one day he decided to just quit looking. And when he did he found someone that had similar interest on the internet and they shared poetry, laughter, life from 3000 miles apart and then one day he heard God's voice on the telephone and God said to him, "You are beautiful".~ Silence on the cellular and then he confirmed what he already knew. And he understood that she loved him because he was beautiful in many colors and non of his beauty had been touched by her physically. She then proceeded to move her hands away from now tight curls and she lay them where she wanted him to touch her someday and they both sighed rainbow arches. Copyright © 2000 by Didi Menendez.
