Oh Lita
a song of longing
by Jamie Joy Gatto
Oh, Lita
Where are you, my intense consort
My sympathetic, lady who won't run from me,
from the devil's lust,
from the lover's pain that doubtless accompanies
all the tragedies of hard-won love?
Will you accept me in my married state?
A man has claimed my heart first, but will you be brave enough to eat from me,
to take my self, to share my soul?
Oh, Lita
When I think of you I'm frightened
I see you wavering into focus as the archetype hag,
prone to the emasculation of men
You terrify a woman who does not wish for superiority, but hard-won equality
Are you a fighter? Will you give that up for me?
Can you embrace my bisexuality?
Oh, Lita
When I imagine you, I'm famished
I think of petals
between your thighs opening, blooming showers for me
I dream of breasts,
your fruits ripening on the bough, fragrant, pungent, tempting
I can smell your breath, your skin, your hair
Need vanquishes all my senses,
I can only starve for you
Oh, Lita
I am the one who is running, hiding myself from you,
denying you exist
I take notice only when you are in shadows,
I hide you in poetry, in dreams
And openly denounce my blunt desire for you
Pray for me, entreat one day
I'll stop and notice you right here,
walking at my side
Give me the courage to see you as you are.
Real, whole, alive, and mine.
