I first started using a computer about four years ago; at the time I was a complete technophobe, anything to do with computers sent me cold. But I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, as I was trying to write a book on airbrushing and the only realistic way to achieve this aim was to use a computer. That was the start of the most traumatic twelve months of my life, as the machine I had bought came as a pile of components, a good friend of mine put the thing together but it wouldn't work properly and was consistently crashing, which at the time was reinforcing my belief that computers were only fit for playing mindless games on, but this machine wouldn't even do that, as my son would testify, But like most artists my masochistic tendencies kept me going, at the end of twelve months I had replaced every component and met every computer expert in the western world, or so they said.. At last I had a machine that worked of sorts, it was at that time I was offered a job as art director at a small computer graphics company that also built their own machines, this was an eye opening experience to say the least. The first and most obvious thing I did was to order a new machine, plus I had to have a good 3D program, as I had seen some 3D work and I thought it would be easy to improve, as most if not all the computer generated images I had seen were very clinical and lifeless. A very arrogant remark considering I hadn't even used 3D program in my life. But why spoil the habit of a lifetime, I was informed one day by a close friend, "most people are born with a plastic spoon in their mouths, I had been born with a foot in mine"
