Erotogenic Reviewed By Kevin R. Tipple
Rating: ****
Ordinarily I don't review items this short. At 36 pages which
works out to slightly more than 10, 700 words I would strongly
hesitate to even call it a book. Based on length alone, it does
not even fit in the novella category and basically just fits
the short story market. At the same time, when contacted by
the author, the work seemed intriguing enough to take a look
and I am glad I did.
The author describes the work in the beginning of the collection
as:
This is the first collection of erotic short stories by the
writer, Carrie White. The writer has drawn from her own experiences,
her heart and her imagination, to bring these stories to you.
Immerse yourself in the erotic world of the blatant sexuality
of several different women and men in their separate lives.
Sex in the most daring of places; Emotions of raw sexual tension;
Excitement and lust are displayed with no lack of inhibition
or the sense of self- consciousness. One, or all, are our secret
fantasies that we have only dreamed about. Now, they are all
written here for you to enjoy. The first, with the hope of many
more such collections to come, Erotogenic tantalises your literary
taste buds for more of the same from a new, fresh talent in
Erotica.
And while it is unfortunately short, on that level it does
work. These five stories that primarily use realized fantasy
as a theme do work in both a story and an erotic sense.
The opening story is titled "Floodgates" and revolves around
Eliza. Eliza rides the London tube daily to her job and has
fantasies concerning a certain man that she sees quite often.
Her day is made when she realizes that her mystery man is pressed
up against her thanks to the crowded car and clearly has much
the same intention on her as she does on him.
This leads into "Booking Bonnie" where a chance encounter
with another woman in the ladies restroom leads to a surprising
twist. No wonder they don't ever go in alone.
Following "Booking Bonnie" is "In the Archives." The setting
for this one is the local library where Claire has fantasies
about one of the male patrons. While working in the vacant archives
section he arrives and soon makes her very glad to be working
in the library. Forth in this collection is "Our Time." Anne
Seldon runs a bookshop and this is her day to interview people
for the vacant job opening in her shop. Kate walks in for her
interview and Anne finds herself strongly attracted to her.
So much so, she has a hard time staying focused on the interview
and instead fantasizes about what she would do with the nubile
Kate.
Closing out the work is "On Lorie's Payroll" where Terry is
obsessed with Lorie and has plans for her. But like most plans,
things seem to go awry at first. But then again, do they really?
While realized fantasy is a strong theme of the work, twisted
endings are also a major component. These are stories where
the reader simply has to read every single word, all the way
top the very end, to get the whole picture. In each case, both
the twist and the fantasy are done well.
While exceedingly short, this is an erotic and enjoyable work.
According to the author's website she is currently at work on
novels. Considering the quality of work in this collection as
well as how well these short stories were received in major
magazines in Europe, the novels should be interesting and enjoyable.
This is one author definitely worth keeping an eye on.
