Unlike her enjoyable e-novel anthology Chained Melodies, this anthology
simply isn't worth your time. This absolutely unarousing and uninspired
e-novel contains eleven short stories under various chapter headings.
In almost every instance, the chapter/story is really more a "slice
of life" piece instead of an actual story. The few chapters that
seem to be actual stories leave the reader wondering why the good
idea was executed so poorly and why it was not finished. However,
regardless of the chapter involved, the writing is cold, harsh and
unfeeling and the brief moments of described passion fall flat and
are simply not arousing.
Unfortunately, the opening chapter "Brave New World?" is the best
that this anthology has to offer. The premise is interesting and
shows definite potential. Sometime in the future, thanks to genetic
engineering and unintended consequences, there has been a drastic
drop in the fertility rate and a horrific rise in sexually transmitted
diseases. Therefore, good quality male sperm is in short supply
and the males that can produce are jealously guarded in military
style compounds. They are treated no better than modern day lab
rats. They are known by the derogatory name "STUDS" and are tightly
controlled. Unfortunately, for the females in charge, the Studs
don't like being held in captivity and there is a rebel group that
seeks to exploit security weaknesses to change society.
This interesting premise leads to a relatively flat story, but
one that has possibilities. At the close of chapter one, the reader
is left hanging, expecting that it would be concluded. Instead,
the next chapter is another story, more like the slice of life type
fiction as opposed to a short story, and this continues through
the rest of the work. The opening story is left twisting in the
wind as an interesting premise isn't finished.
While all the stories contained in this novel are from different
perspectives and unnamed narrators, they have a common theme. The
writing is cold, harsh and unfeeling and the described sexual passion
seems contrived. Most of the stories also seem to reflect negative
feelings toward men. Even so, the hostility towards men that comes
through is flat, uninspired and without passion towards this subject
or any other. This is an unfeeling, sterile novel and for those
that liked Chained Melodies, a real disappointment.
